We have an exciting race coming to you on the Sutallee trails of Canton, GA just a short drive north of Atlanta. The great thing about the sport of running is the camaraderie among runners. In a typical race the faster runner (Hare) arrives long before the middle/back of the pack and the slower runner (Tortoise) arrives as the party is ending. How about a race where everyone finishes (approximately) at the same time?! Introducing…the TORTOISE and the HARE HALF MARATHON™!
Runners estimate their finishing time (see below for calculator) and that will determine your starting time, with runners starting in half hour waves – Tortoises first! The slower you are, the earlier you begin and the faster you are, the later you begin with the same goal: Finishing at 11 AM. This will bring everyone to the finish in a smaller time frame so there will be lots of fellow runners to celebrate your finish! (Of course, the winners will still be those that complete the course in the fastest time – but with the challenge of navigating around the Tortoises!)
The TORTOISE and the HARE HALF MARATHON™ will be held on September 5, 2015. This will be first race in the Tortoise and the Hare Trail Series. Registration will open in February!
The course consists of mostly rolling hills with intermediate inclines. The terrain is relatively smooth, with some occasional rocks and roots. We consider the course intermediate in terms of difficulty. However, this trail is recommended for runners of all abilities, whether you’re a Tortoise or Hare. Just don’t underestimate this course – it’s not flat or easy! The course will be well marked with colored ribbon as well as signs and volunteers at critical turning points on the trail.
There are a total of 4 aid stations (one you pass twice) that will be fully stocked with all the typical sweet/carbs you could ask for as well as Powerade and water. We will have volunteers on hand to refill your hydration pack/bottles and medical staff on hand should an injury occur.
Packet Pick-up and same day registration will be held on site from 6:30-9:30. You MUST have your bib picked up a minimum of a half hour before your wave. Early packet pick up will be held in Canton but will be announced closer to race day. All race updates will be communicated via our email newsletter.
ALL participants will receive a unique shirt with Tortoise and the Hare Race logos and ALL finishers will receive a custom finisher’s medal.
Top overall Male and Female win free entry into all Tortoise and the Hare Trail Races in 2016. Perks will include Tortoise and the Hare branded gear (shirts, etc.) and more!
Our slogan is “Fast or slow…just go!” The beauty of this race is that it welcomes runners of all paces. Race will begin at your selected half hour wave start time beginning at 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30, 9, 9:30 and 10 am with the same goal finishing time for both races. The goal finishing time is 11 AM, so you will estimate the length of time it will take you to complete the course (online calculator HERE). The unique event that is the Tortoise and the Hare Half Marathon™ will only be successful if all participants choose an honest starting time relative to their ability. During online registration you will select your starting time.
There will be 2 different colored shirts, which will only be revealed at packet pick-up, based on whether you are the Tortoise or the Hare. To get the full race experience of the Hares catching the Tortoises at the end we strongly encourage you to wear your “team colors” on race day!

Rules of the Course
Carrying your own Hydration is HIGHLY recommended . There will be plenty of fluids at aid stations, but for the safety of all participants we strongly suggest it.
Carrying your own nutrition is HIGHLY recommended. Although there will be aid stations we strongly suggest you carry items such as nutrition bars, gels and salt tablets.
